Welsh Music Foundation is proud to announce two separate days of conferences addressing key issues relating to the Welsh Language Music Industry. The conferences are being held in Caernarfon and Cardiff during January 2008 and following research into the needs of the Industry, will feature seminars covering a variety of relevant and topical subjects.

The one-day conference in Caernarfon will concentrate on a variety of key issues including licensing issues for gigs, how to start arranging your own festival and legal matters within the music industry.

In Cardiff, the media’s Welsh Language output will be discussed along with subjects from the digital music world that will examine how to market your music digitally, the future of digital music and much more.

Thursday January 17, 2008 - Galeri, Caernarfon

Eleanor Brody (music law specialist at IPS Law), Rachel Wood of Woodwork Music (synchronisation and licensing specialists for independent record labels) and John Hywel Morris (MCPS-PRS Alliance) will be detailing the legalities involved in music licensing for composers, performers, the media, event organisers and venue hosts.  Eleanor has been involved in drafting and negotiating contracts and advising on rights issues across the whole spectrum of the music industry.  Rachel of Woodwork Music boasts a vast client list and has placed music in hit US TV shows including CSI and The O.C. John is especially involved with Welsh-Language licensing at MCPS as well as serving Welsh PRS and MCPS members.
 
With the live music scene more vibrant than ever in Wales, have you ever wondered what licenses you needed to organise your own?  Since the Licensing Act was introduced in 2005, many people have been unsure of how to fully conform to new regulations, or how to obtain licenses.  Phil Rafferty is the Senior Licensing Officer for Conwy County Council and he will be discussing the applications - problems and success stories - he and his team have faced as well as answering some of your queries regarding event licensing.  Alan James is an expert festival organiser and music industry advisor and will be in attendance to offer his expertise. 

And to fully compliment the performance and live music theme, Dilwyn Morgan from the North Wales Events Commission and Steve Blake, One of the Directors of the Vaynol Group of Companies, Home of the Vaynol Festival the four-day festival which attracts sell out crowds of over 30,000 each year as well as years experience of in and around the festival and music industry will be presenting and on-hand to share experiences, guidance, hints and tips.

Sian GwyneddBBC Radio Cymru Editor in Chief, Robert Nicholls - Culture Content Editor, S4C and Ceri Sherlock - Commissioning Executive for the Arts, BBC Wales, combine their years of experience and current expertise to host a very special talk on the ‘Welsh Language Media Output in the 21st Century’ looking at ideas for adapting to the challenges that lay ahead.

 
The fast-paced changing nature of the music industry is discussed in ‘Digital – The Way Forward’Andrew Dubber of New Music Strategies – an innovative company dedicated to helping independent musicians and music businesses adapt and thrive in the online environment – who is joined by Jim Sanders of 7Digital – the UK’s leading digital media delivery company.  They will each be sharing ideas for strategic direction aimed particularly at composers, publishers, musicians etc –and practically everyone involved in the music industry!

 

Rhodri Marsden, a Journalist for The Independent and a host of publications - recently undertook an experiment to release his own single through DIY channels, and became a YouTube sensation.  He will be adding his input from his experiences in the final section of the afternoon for ‘Digital – Marketing and Merchandising’Phil Cooper from Creative Cultures - expert digital promotion strategists whose clients include MTV, Universal, EMI and Ministry of Sound - joins Rhodri to deliver sound direction and inspiration for excelling within the music scene during 2008 and into the future.

The afternoon will feature Q&A sessions – an excellent opportunity to have individual queries addressed.  The day will also serve as a great networking opportunity for everyone in attendance.  Sessions will be conducted in both the medium of English and Welsh language – translation facilities will be available.
