Film Trailer Music Masterclass

Welsh Music Foundation and Musician's Union present...
Film Trailer Music Masterclass at Soundtrack International Film & Music Festival

Thursday November 17th 2011
6pm - 7.30pm
Newport Centre, Newport

This seminar will provide an in-depth look at the art of music for film trailers, featuring composer Timo Baker in conversation with MU National Organiser, Recording and Broadcasting, Ben Jones.

Timo will give a detailed account of his creative process, composing techniques and how he approaches this type of work, illustrated with examples from the trailer for The Adjustment Bureau, a new thriller from writer-director George Nolfi, based on a short story by Philip K. Dick.

Film trailer music is a rapidly-growing – and often overlooked – area of work for composers and requires a different approach to other media commissions.  Timo will also talk about the pitching and commissioning process.

Timo Baker has composed music for Universal, CBS, BBC, Channel 4, National Geographic, MTV, Sony Playstation, among others during a career that has spanned twelve years.

Three of his tracks have been licensed by the CSI: NY series in the last 18 months. He has written scores for over 20 feature-length documentaries that have been broadcast in the US and UK in the last 13 months.

In early 2011, one of his tracks was featured as part of the international trailer for quirky alien comedy, Paul, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and in February, his soundtrack for the trailer for The Adjustment Bureau, starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, was released worldwide.  Timo has pitched for a number of Hollywood box office film trailers, including The Fighter, Inception and The Green Lantern.

Timo Baker is a highly creative and versatile composer. His evocative orchestral scores for television documentaries such as Nature Shock for National Geographic provide an epic sense of drama and tension to the subject matter. His thoughtful and contemporary musical insight has supplied edgy and experimental soundscapes to powerful TV dramas, as much as to flagship TV themes for the BBC, such as its annual World Snooker coverage, and science fiction spin off Totally Dr Who.  Timo is equally at home working with big beats and rock noise, as in the case of the hard-hitting score he composed for PlayStation game Ghostrider and the intense Coca Cola ad soundtrack which was screened in Europe in 2008.

In 2010, Timo was brought in to the stable of recording artists and composers (including The Prodigy) of LA-based film music agents, Pusher Music, where he’s become one of their “go to” composers.

Timo has recently written the score to a short film, “A Cosmological Fantasia”, which is currently being screened by BAFTA around the UK. It is based on the space landscape graphics from the hit BBC series “Wonders Of The Universe” created by film effects wizards, BDH.
