WALES’ INDEPENDENTS READY FOR RECORD STORE DAY 2011

Record Store Day (RSD) is an annual celebration of independent record shops across the world, this year happening on Saturday 16th April. Here in Wales, record stores will mark the occasion with in-store events and special gigs that customers can be part of whilst seeking out selections of exclusive vinyl and CD limited releases.
Spillers Records, the world's oldest record shop, who are now based in The Morgan Arcade, Cardiff, have planned a packed schedule. From hosting special customer DJ sets and performances, to badge making and record sleeve design activities. Look out for lucky bags, a raffle with exclusive Spillers goodies, plus, a fanzine featuring recommends and content from long-term regulars. And that’s not all. As well as a set from Y Niwl in the shop during the afternoon, later that evening, Future of the Left headline Clwb Ifor Bach for a Spiller’s Record Store Day gig.
Customers at Cob Records, Bangor can look forward to live music from Y Niwl before they travel down the country to Spillers, plus, bands including Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog and Heldinki will take to the store's floor space and play live.
Catapult in Cardiff's High Street Arcade is gearing up to offer promotions across the store and live in-store sets from Hospital Records’ brothers in arms Nu:Tone and Logisitics. Also, expect a series of local talent DJing in the basement, including Lung and future garage outfit CRST. The store will also be using the occasion as an opportunity to launch its very own record label ‘Catapult Records,’ showcasing talent in South Wales.
Simon Thomas, manager of Catapult Records said
“Record Store Day gets better every year; it’s something we and our regular customers have started to look forward to celebrating every year.”
Diverse Music in Newport are joining the festivities and will have an assortment of limited releases in stock, Sarah Howells from Paper Aeroplanes will grace the store with live music from their new album and there’s the chance to see The Redlands Palomino Company perform an acoustic set. Goody Bags, a raffle and even vinyl cupcakes from the nearby Secret Garden Café are being prepared too.
Carmarthen's only independent record shop, Tangled Parrot, will host Alex Dingley, Trwbador and H-Hawkline who will each be performing live throughout the day at the store’s brand new location on Kings Street, Carmarthen. Tangled Parrot invites music enthusiasts to bring along their favourite records in the evening for a night dedicated to swapping stories, recommendations and musical tastes.
Lisa Matthews, Manager at Welsh Music Foundation said
“The importance of independent record stores and the role they play in the music scene cannot be overstated. There are a number of long-serving stores in Wales, at a time when closures are reported across the UK and in other countries"
Across Wales, independent stores like Andy’s Records in Aberystwyth will be stocking a limited selection of special releases and Derrick’s Records in Swansea are set for the occasion, too. Moonlight Records in Wrexham are hosting a day of live music, followed by a night-time event...see HERE for details.
Mold Record Shop on New Street opens at 9am and stays open until 5pm. A Record Fair takes place just a few yards away at the Daniel Owen Community Centre, starting at 10am and will be supported by some of the UK's top record dealers. In the shop there will be some exclusive releases for the day including a very special 7 inch single by North Wales own 'The Joy Formidable'. All exclusives are on a first come first served basis...the first 5 customers will receive a 6 Music vinyl compilation absolutely free. Chance of some free badges too! Notes for editors
The original idea for Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 as a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally.
This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances.
Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April.
