Malcolm Jones

Biography

Army Musician First Class

B.A. Hons. Band Studies ( Sheffield University)

MALCOLM JONES has been steeped in music his entire life; as a professional musician, teacher, conductor, arranger and composer. He has been playing music since the age of seven when he joined his village brass band in Seven Sisters. At the age of fifteen he joined the Welsh Guards Band and was principal Euphonium there for 7 years. On leaving the army he was lead trombone for the Ray Shields Orchestra and later on formed his own Jazz Big Band ‘Tuxedo Junction’, which he led from the trombone stand. He has also worked in show bands, pit orchestras and as a jazz soloist, playing in most of the top venues in the country.

He has taught and conducted music for over 20 years, and has intimate working knowledge of the instrumentation and balance of all musical ensembles.

As well as being a very capable stylistic composer, Malcolm’s original work has a distinctive flavour all its own. Malcolm has a strong feel for melody and can orchestrate for many different combinations … from solo keyboard to jazz trios to bands, choirs or full symphony orchestras.

“It was while studying composition under Arthur Butterworth that I discovered my ability for composition. It had long been a dream of mine to compose music for film, as I am inspired by the images and moods of film and other art forms, and my music has a strong ‘visual’ quality. Although trained in classical composition and orchestration, I also love to write and arrange Jazz, an art form I am widely experienced in.”

I have played at the Albert Hall/ Royal Festival Hall / Madison Square Gardens/ Hollywood and all over the USA/ Leeds Opera House/ Buckingham Palace/ Wembley Stadium/ National Stadium Cardiff/ Windsor Castle/ Cardiff Castle/ Saint David’s Hall/ Caesars Palace Luton/ The Dorchester Hotel/ The Piccadilly Hotel/ The Royal Garden Hotel/ The Ritz/ The Everyman Theatre/ The Theatre Royal Bath/ and most major theatres in the UK.

I have played for Royalty and Heads of State on many occasions/ I have done live recordings for BBC & ITV, both Radio and Television, and recorded lots of LP’s.

I have worked with many famous stars: ones I remember Are Tom Jones/Sammy Davis Junior/Harry Secombe/Marion Montgomery/The Four Tops.

I have recorded at Abbey Road Studios/CTS Studios Wembley/ I have played for the variety club of Great Britain / Command Performances and lots more that I’ve forgotten.

Styles I work in : Classical : Bi-tonal, A-tonal, Tri-tonal, Serial Composition (12-tone, etc.); Romantic ( Tchaikovsky-esque), Classical ( Haydn-esque), and Baroque ( Vivaldi-esque ) ; Jazz : Trad. Jazz, Modern Jazz, Be-bop Jazz, Big Band Swing, Jazz Rock/Funk.
